What can I expect when I attend Ascension Lutheran Church?
What to Expect
You can expect to be greeted at the door by a friendly member of Ascension's family. You will be directed to our worship area. If you have any questions about the building, location of restrooms, or worship service please feel free to ask anyone you see. While we are going to be happy to have you with us and while we look forward to meeting you, you can be sure we won't ask you to stand and identify yourself or do anything to put you on the spot.
What are your worship services like?
You can expect our worship service to be visitor friendly. We print our entire service in our service folder each week so that you won't have to find your way around a worship and song book that you may not be familiar with. You can expect some variety in our worship. We celebrate Holy Communion in worship on the first and third Sundays of the month (please see the FAQ below for more information about that) On the forth Sunday of the month we have what we call blended worship. Musically, it is a blend of songs the church has sung for a long time and songs that are more contemporary. Sometimes it is accompanied by piano, sometimes by a small worship ensemble, and sometimes by means of a video based program with prerecorded musical tracks. Liturgically, it is often an order of worship written especially for that Sunday. The sermon part of the service often uses a format that is designed to be more interactive. Other times our order of service may be one of several that we often use in our church body. No matter the order of service, our worship typically involves singing, a joint confession of sins and announcement of forgiveness, readings from the Bible, a message from God's Word, prayers, and a closing blessing. Each Sunday of the year has a particular theme around which all the songs, Scripture readings, and sermon are organized.
What is the dress code?
There is no dress code at Ascension. It is most important to us that you are here. We do try to reflect in our dress that we are meeting together in God's house and for his glory. Our pastor usually wears a clerical robe during worship, but not always.
Will I be asked to contribute?
We do collect an offering sometime during each Sunday service. However, the members of Ascension Lutheran Church consider it their privilege to honor God with their gifts and their responsibility to support the work we do at Ascension and the work we do around the world through our parent church body. We will not expect you as a visitor to contribute. If you would like to give a gift to the Lord you are welcome to do so, but it is no way expected of you.
Are children welcome?
Yes! Children are always welcome at Ascension. We do not provide a children's area where they stay during worship because we want families to worship together. If your child needs a place to be comforted or quieted, we have a parents room just off the worship area where you will still be able to see and hear everything that is happening in worship. For children aged preschool through 6th grade we have a childrens ministry after worship called ChristLight for Kids. Visiting children are always welcome there, too.
What is expected for membership?
Are you currently a member of a sister congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and would like to become a member at Ascension? Just talk to Pastor Simons. It will be a simple matter of transferring your membership to Ascension.
Do you have a church you usually attend but would like more information about Ascension?
Are you looking for a new church?
Just talk to Pastor Simons, he will be very helpful in sharing with you some options for becoming familiar with what we believe and teach so that you can make an informed decision. You will always be welcome to explore what we believe and teach without any obligation or expectation for joining our church. That decision will always be yours to make freely.
What should I know about Holy Communion at Ascension?
The Bible teaches us that Jesus offers and gives us his body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins in the Lord's Supper. The Bible also instructs us that receiving the Lord's Supper together is a public expression of our complete "oneness"; or unity of faith. Because the Lord's Supper is an expression of our unity in faith, we invite to the Lord's Supper only those who have expressed that unity with us through membership in our congregation or one of our sister congregations in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), or our sister denomination, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS). If you are a guest or visitor from another Christian church or hold membership in no church, we kindly ask that you arrange a time to meet with Pastor Simons before you attend Holy Communion at Ascension. We don't want to be presumptuous and put you in the position of declaring your agreement with our beliefs by communing with us before you have had a chance to learn more about what we believe. We would like you to be able to join us for the Lord's Supper in the near future. Pastor Simons would be happy to discuss this with you and answer any questions you may have. Thank you for being patient and respectful of our practice of Holy Communion.
Can I attend Bible studies at Ascension even if I am not a member?
Of course you can! All our Bible study opportunities are open to guests and visitors. They are visitor friendly, free of charge, informal, and all materials are provided. We will never put you on the spot, there is no such thing as a dumb question, and there are always refreshments to enjoy as we get into the Word together.
